The long answer is that the Wii U, when modded, can actually play GameCube games, and the reason for this is purely coincidental, not deliberate. Doing so would have driven costs up as they would have had to include GameCube Controller Ports and Memory Card slots, which just wasn't in the cards. The short answer is Nintendo didn't want to support GameCube games on a system that was 12 years newer than the GameCube.
